Today we are highlighting Patty, who has been with us for about 2 months.
Patty had been suffering from intermittent low back pain for several months. As a result, she found herself avoiding activities such as kayaking, yard work, yoga, and even just bending. She was moving very gingerly in order to avoid having a painful back spasm. At Patty’s first session, when asked about her goals, she said, “I want to be able to dance at my daughter’s wedding.”
When she first arrived at PT, she was clearly moving in ways that did not move her back. We talked a lot about how strong the spine actually is and that it gets its nutrition from movement. With supervised movements, she felt better after the first session. She was so motivated during each session. Every time I progressed an exercise, she rose to meet the challenge. We also had a lot of laughs along the way. She learned that as long as she did her exercises consistently in between our sessions, she didn’t have pain.
Patty is now back to kayaking and all her normal activities. She can move her back in all directions without hesitation. She said, “I wish I hadn’t waited so long to address my pain. I wasted months worrying about the cause and suffering. Next time, I’ll know that the sooner I address it, the sooner it will start to get better.
With PT, Patty says, “I have the tools to keep growing stronger and more confident, and I have the motivation to stick to the work more than I ever have before.” At her last session, I asked her if she felt confident in being able to dance at her daughter’s upcoming wedding. She unequivocally said yes!
